Less than 2 weeks right into September, the Yankees had virtually nothing to bet. Postseason berth? Inspect. AL East crown? Examine. Home area benefit throughout the postseason? While they had currently crossed the century mark, only one teamthe Boston Red Soxhad even more than 80 success. For the following 2 weeks, the only point the Yankees had to play for was a shot at history.Meanwhile, the Toronto Blue Jays were still in the midst of a playoff race, although with minimal margin of mistake: they were only 4 video games back from the Red Sox in the Wild Card race. Every game matteredand that showed itself on this certain day.September 12: Blue Jays 5, Yankees 3Record: 103-43,.705 Shannon Stewart led off the game with a single off starter David Wells, and after he advanced to 2nd on a 1-3 groundout, he took 3rd before racking up on a Jose Canseco sacrifice fly to give Toronto an early 1-0 lead. The Yankees, meanwhile, struck early against Chris Carpenter. Homer Shrub led off with a dual down the third base line; he would certainly progress to third when Derek Jeter got to on an E7. With Paul O'Neill at the plate, Jeter after that took second. O'Neill grounded bent on second, racking up Bush and advancing Jeter to 3rd, and the future Captain would score on a Tino Martinez sacrifice fly.The score would settle in below with a 2-1 Yankees lead for the next couple of frames, as Wells and Woodworker exchanged nos. Everything transformed in the top of the fifth, nonetheless. Tony Fernandez led off the inning with a solitary up the center, and Benito Santiago tied a double bizarre over the head of facility fielder Chad Curtis to bring him home. The protection after that decided to go all "Problem Bears." When Shrub Blue Jays Store, the cut-off man, tossed the sphere home in an effort to obtain Fernandez at home plate, Santiago removed for 3rd. The toss was broad, however Wells was supporting the tossed; he picked it up and tossed the round right into left field to enable Santiago to rack up. While Wells took down the next 3 players in order, the Blue Jays had already taken a 3-2 lead. Toronto would add 2 more in the adhering to structure, as Shawn Green and Jose Cruz singled to place 2 runners on for Fernandez's bases-clearing triple. The Yankees clawed back one of those runs in all-time low of the 6th, many thanks virtually entirely to Bush. The second baseman led off with a single, swiped second, progressed to 3rd when Jeter grounded out, and racked up on a wild pitch. Sadly for the Bombing planes, that would certainly be the last time the Yankees schedule resembled endangering that night, as they dropped meekly across the last three video games, 2023-style. With the loss, the Yankees dropped to 5-6 in the month of September. Not only did this put their pursuit for history at risk, as most of us understand, nobody respects the number of regular period wins you build up if you aren't the last team standing. The Yankees were playing their worst brand of baseball because the opening week of the period at the worst possible time.
